GAT conference on the implementation of UNSCR 1325 in Cyprus and the region

GAT organised a conference on 6 December 2012 entitled "Women's Peace: Applying UNSCR 1325 to Cyprus and the Region". The conference was organised together with PRIO Cyprus Centre and funded by the Norway Grants and UNDP-ACT Cyprus.

Internationally-renowned feminists and activist women from the South European and MENA regions, as well as academics working in the field of gender and conflict, attended the conference and presented insights from their experience in gender mainstreaming in post-conflict transitions. They included Sundus Abbas, Rada Boric, Galia Golan, Carrie Hamilton, Nur Mardin, and Fotini Sianou.  The conference was opened by Lisa Buttenheim, Special Representative in Cyprus of the UN Secretary General and Elisabeth Walaas, State Secretary at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The conference also launched GAT's recommendations to the Cypriot negotiators in the form of a report and policy brief. Gender focal points from the negotiators' teams were also present to discuss GAT's report.

The conference was followed on 7 December 2012 by a workshop between Cypriot gender activists and representatives of women's organisations from abroad. During the workshop current practices and challenges were compared, and possibilities for future action discussed.
